Abstract: In this experiments, infants will first view a series of eight objects from an unfamiliar category (e.g., lemon squeezers) that vary in low-level visual features (e.g., color, orientation, pose, and lighting). Half of the infants will hear labels (e.g., “Look at the [toma]! Do you see the [toma]?”) during these trials, and half of the infants will hear a series of contingent sine-wave tones. At test, if infants have perceived these objects as part of the same category, they should prefer to look at an object from a novel category (Fantz, 1964). Thus, the degree to which infants spend time looking at an object from a novel category (versus the newly learned category) can be taken as an index of infants’ ability to discriminate between the learned and novel categories. To examine the specificity of infants’ visual representations, we will examine how infants’ looking behaviors vary on silent test trials based on the perceptual similarity between the novel and learned category We will also include exploratory ...
